Tracking Events on Google Analytics via Google Tag Manager

If you are using Google Analytics (“GA”) via Google Tag Manager (“GTM”), it is necessary to configure a couple of additional settings in GTM to get live chat events in GA recorded.

  1. Log in to your GTM account, go to the “Tags” section and click on the “New” button.
  2. Click on the “Tag Configuration” and choose the “Universal Analytics” option.
  3. In the “Track Type” drop-down list, choose “Event”.
  4. Under the “Event Tracking Parameters” heading:
    1. Hit the macro button in the “Category” section.
    2. Click on the “+” button in the upper right corner.
    3. Click on the “Variable Configuration” and choose “Data Layer Variable” from the list of available options.
    4. In the “Data Layer Variable Name” field, type in “eventCategory” and click on the “Save” button.
    5. You will be asked to rename your Variable. Name it e.g. “GA Event Lime Talk Category” and save changes.
  5. In the same way as described in steps 4.1 - 4.5, create new variables for the following fields:
    1. Action: “Data Layer Variable Name” must be “eventAction”. Your name can be e.g. “GA Event Lime Talk Action”.
    2. Label: “Data Layer Variable Name” must be “eventLabel”. Your name can be e.g. “GA Event Lime Talk Label”.
    3. Value: “Data Layer Variable Name” must be “eventValue”. Your name can be e.g. “GA Event Lime Talk Value”.
  6. In the “Google Analytics Settings” drop-down list, fill in your GA Tracking ID. In this tutorial, we have choosen the “{{Google Analytics Settings}}” variable, which we have already created in the past and which represents our GA Tracking ID.
  7. Click on the “Triggering” available below.
  8. Click on the “+” button in the upper right corner.
  9. Click on the “Trigger Configuration” and choose “Custom Event” from the list of available options.
  10. In the “Event name” field, type in “gaEventLimeTalk” and click on “Save”.
  11. You will be asked to rename your Trigger. Name it e.g. “GA Event Lime Talk Trigger” and save changes.
  12. Finalize by clicking on the “Save” button in the upper right corner. Again, you will be asked to rename your new Tag. Name it e.g. “GA Event Lime Talk Tag” and confirm changes by clicking on “Save”.
  13. Click on the “Submit“ button and publish your changes in the Workspace.

If you have the option “Send events to Google Analytics” activated in the settings in your Lime Talk client zone, events should be now recorded in GA. You can verify this in your GA in the section Reports -> Real-time -> Events.
