Connecting Lime Talk to Your Mobile Device

Lime Talk supports communication via XMPP/Jabber protocol. This gives you great flexibility when choosing the application that you wish to use to communicate with your website’s visitors. This article will show you how to set up your mobile device so that it can be used to communicate with your website’s visitors.

What you will need

In order to set up Lime Talk to work properly with your mobile device, you need three things:

  1. Lime Talk account
  2. XMPP/Jabber account
  3. XMPP/Jabber application installed on your mobile device

1. Lime Talk account

I believe you already have that. If not, just sign up.

2. XMPP/Jabber Account

You may easily create your XMPP/Jabber account here at https://www.xmpp.jp/signup. Just choose a username and password, verify that you are not a robot and click “Register” (see picture below). If your chosen username is available, you should receive a message confirming successful registration.

3. XMPP/Jabber Application

XMPP/Jabber protocol is an open platform, so there is a wide variety of solutions for each operating system. We have tested some of the applications:

Android: Xabber
iOS (iPhone / iPad / iPod): Trillian (registration with Trillian required)

The same process may be used to connect your desktop IM application to your Lime Talk account. This way, you don’t need to have Lime Talk client zone opened in your browser.

Windows: pidgin.im, trillian.im (registration with Trillian required)
OS X (Mac): adium.im, psi-im.org

Final Step: Connect Your XMPP/Jabber Application with Your Lime Talk Account

  • Log into Lime Talk client zone.
  • Click on your name in the upper right-hand corner and navigate to “Communication through mobile devices“.
  • There you will find an authorization code that you will need later in your IM application.
  • Open your IM application on your mobile device and add the address bot1@jabber.limetalk.com as your new contact.
  • Once you have added bot1@jabber.limetalk.com as your new contact, send it a new message with your authorization code. The message should look something like “!setup 743876556c4b716167773d3d”.
  • You will receive a confirmation message, and other Lime Talk contacts (chat bots) will ask you to accept them as a contact. Accept their requests. Each of these contacts (called bots) will serve as a connector for one of your customers. Since Lime Talk has six chat bots, you can chat with up to six different customers at the same time.

We have created a tutorial “Installing Trillian on Apple” to give you an idea of how this works. The procedure is similar in every other application.

From now on, using Lime Talk on your mobile device is very simple. Just be online on your IM account that is connected to your Lime Talk account, and your website’s visitors will see you online. You will receive a message in your IM application when someone tries to contact you. If you want to get offline, just sign out in your IM application.
